Wimbledon 2023: Upsets and Stan Wawrinka sets up clash with Novak Djokovic in thrilling third round. Wimbledon

In an eventful day at Wimbledon 2023, Taylor Fritz suffered a disappointing defeat, while the seasoned veteran Stan Wawrinka secured a spot in the third round to set up a thrilling clash against Novak Djokovic.

Taylor Fritz, the ninth seed from the United States, let slip a two-set lead against Mikael Ymer, ranked 59th in the world. Fritz lost the match to the determined Swede with a final score of 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

On the other hand, Swiss player Stan Wawrinka emerged victorious against the 29th seed, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, in a hard-fought battle of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In addition, notable wins were also recorded by Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, and Matteo Berrettini.

Although Taylor Fritz has tasted success in major ATP Tour tournaments, such as winning the Indian Wells title in 2022, he has consistently faced challenges in Grand Slam events. His only quarter-final appearance in a Grand Slam came last year at Wimbledon, where he fell short against an injured Rafael Nadal. This year, Fritz struggled to overcome an inspired Mikael Ymer.

Fritz’s defeat marked the second loss of a top-10 player on Thursday, following the earlier defeat of fourth seed Casper Ruud to Britain’s Liam Broady.

Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka, currently ranked 88th in the world, has triumphed in every Grand Slam except Wimbledon. He demonstrated his prowess by swiftly taking the opening set against Argentine Etcheverry in just over 30 minutes on a packed Court Three. Despite Etcheverry’s comeback, Wawrinka claimed victory by winning the next two sets. He is now set to face 36-year-old Djokovic, whom he defeated in the finals of the 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open.

Expressing his satisfaction with the win, Wawrinka stated, “I’m pleased with my performance and believe I am improving with each match. It will be an honor to play Novak here at Wimbledon. Throughout my career, I’ve longed for this opportunity to face him in a Grand Slam event. Undoubtedly, it will be a formidable challenge. Given recent outcomes, I understand the odds are against me.”

fritz needs to work on his consistency. one good tournament doesn’t make up for his lackluster performances in the majors. tough break for him.
