Celtic, the Scottish champions, have officially confirmed the departure of Jota to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad.
The 24-year-old Portuguese winger initially joined Celtic on loan from Benfica in 2021, but last summer, he signed a five-year deal with the Scottish club.
During his two-year tenure in Glasgow, Jota made a significant impact, contributing 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 games. As of late, there had been strong speculation linking him with a £25m move to Al-Ittihad.
Celtic recently welcomed winger Marco Tilio, 21, from Melbourne City to their squad.
The implications of Jota’s move to Al-Ittihad for both him and Celtic are yet to be fully determined. However, Brendan Rodgers, Celtic’s manager, has made another signing in the form of midfielder Odin Thiago Holm from Valerenga, following his return to the club to replace Postecoglou.
Jota played a crucial role in Celtic’s recent success, scoring their final goal in the 3-1 victory over Inverness in the Scottish Cup final. This triumph secured the club’s fifth domestic treble in seven years.
During his time under Ange Postecoglou’s management, Jota was an integral member of the team, winning all but one of the six Scottish trophies available.
With an impressive average of a goal or assist every 111 minutes, Jota joins the likes of manager Postecoglou and the retired Aaron Mooy in leaving Celtic this transfer window.
At Al-Ittihad, Jota will be joining other notable signings such as Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante.
