Inaugural day at Cobham training ground for Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino, the newly appointed manager of Chelsea, regards the club as “the best team in England” in the past decade to a decade and a half.

The Blues have bagged 21 trophies since 2004, with five Premier League titles and a couple of Champions Leagues to their name. Despite their success, the team saw two of its managers sacked last season, concluding the season in the 12th spot.

“Chelsea has been the best team in England over the last 10, 12, 15 years,” proclaimed Pochettino, the ex-Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur boss. “I’m intimately acquainted with the Premier League and the essence of Chelsea’s culture. I believe our fans are thrilled to be back on the victory-seeking path.”

The 51-year-old Argentine, who led Paris St-Germain to three trophies, including the 2021-22 Ligue 1 title, however, returned empty-handed during his prior six-year tenure in England, although he did guide Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019.

“We’re eager to nurture a young team with a fresh approach,” he said. “But it’s important for us all to understand that intense hard work and a positive atmosphere at the training ground are crucial to construct a successful future for the team.

“It’s an honour and a pleasure for me to be a part of Chelsea Football Club. I’m very familiar with Chelsea, it’s one of the world’s top clubs. Naturally, the decision to come here was a no-brainer for us.”

New owner Todd Boehly dismissed managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter in his debut season. The club’s January expenditure of about £288m surpassed the combined spending of all clubs in Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

Chelsea, under Pochettino, will be seeing more changes this summer with Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, and N’Golo Kante departing for Saudi Arabian teams, England’s Mason Mount transferring to Manchester United, Ruben Loftus-Cheek relocating to AC Milan, and Mateo Kovacic signing with reigning champions Manchester City.

France’s Christopher Nkunku has been signed from RB Leipzig for £52m and Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson has come onboard with an eight-year contract from Villarreal.

Pochettino highlighted that a “very well-defined project” is currently underway at Chelsea that might require time, but insists the club needs to maintain its “top-tier” status.

He continued, “The owners and sports directors have outlined the project with absolute clarity, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.

“Our objective is to support the club and its fans. The most vital aspect of football is to make the fans proud and contented. The players need to understand this.

“While football history has its highs and lows, Chelsea is a club where these fluctuations are impossible. We must ensure that we deliver what the club needs to remain at the summit, consistent with the club’s history.”
