CHAN 2024 hosting

Following Senegal’s triumph in the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) held in Algeria earlier in January and February, attention now shifts to the upcoming 2024 edition. The spotlight is set on Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as they gear up to co-host the next CHAN, contingent on the successful evaluation of their stadiums.

This groundbreaking move comes on the heels of these East African nations securing the opportunity to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), marking a historic first in the annals of the continent’s football where three countries collaboratively orchestrate such a significant event.

The trio of nations, each contributing a stadium, along with an additional venue in Zanzibar, are preparing to welcome the CHAN tournament next year, as confirmed by Wallace Karia, the head honcho of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa).

However, Sport News Center Africa reports that the official announcement of the chosen stadiums is still pending, awaiting formal submission to the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

Karia, who doubles as the president of the Tanzania Football Federation, shared at their annual general meeting, “Come September next year, we’re excited to host CHAN across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. We’re proposing to Caf to cluster the Cecafa teams together in the draw, sparking an exhilarating regional rivalry.”

The 2022 edition, albeit delayed, was hosted by Algeria and saw 17 teams compete, with Morocco’s absence due to travel-related disagreements. The tournament, exclusively featuring players from domestic leagues, saw Senegal emerge as champions.

Looking ahead, the Afcon 2027 is anticipated to be exceptionally lucrative, thanks to the joint hosting efforts of these three nations.
