In the third stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne 2023, Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes outpaced her competitors in a sprint finish, including fellow Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos. This success followed her victory over Vos in a similar sprint finish during the 2022 Tour de France Femmes’ opening stage.
Wiebes, a 24-year-old member of Team SD Worx, showcased her timing skills by launching her sprint 150 metres from the finish line in Modena. Her compatriot Vos claimed the second place, with American rider Chloe Dygert taking the third in the group sprint.
The title holder Annemiek van Vleuten managed to hold onto her 49-second lead in the general classification. The flat 118.2km race from Formigine was a playground for the sprinters, particularly after the peloton had drawn in the day’s second breakaway with just 11km to go.
“I’m thrilled to win this stage. The team gave their all,” Wiebes expressed, mentioning that she only had to sprint for the last 150 metres.
