AC Milan has decided to terminate the contract of Paolo Maldini, their technical director and former captain, following his five-year tenure in the role.
Maldini played a remarkable 901 matches for AC Milan during his career as a player.
Under Maldini’s guidance, AC Milan achieved a significant milestone by clinching the Serie A title in 2022, ending an 11-year championship drought.
In the most recent season, the team secured a fourth-place finish in Serie A and advanced to the Champions League semi-finals, where they were unfortunately defeated by their rivals, Inter Milan.
The club expressed gratitude to Maldini for his dedicated service, which played a crucial role in their return to the Champions League and their Scudetto triumph, as stated in an official announcement.
During his tenure as technical director, Maldini played an integral part in acquiring key players such as Rafael Leao, Theo Hernandez, Fikayo Tomori, and Olivier Giroud for the Rossoneri.
The statement further mentioned that a team working closely with the first-team manager would assume Maldini’s day-to-day responsibilities.
Throughout his illustrious career, the 54-year-old Maldini, who spent his entire playing days at AC Milan, amassed an impressive collection of 26 trophies. Notably, he won seven Serie A titles and five European Cup/Champions League titles.
Maldini’s father, Cesare, is also a revered figure at the club, having made 467 appearances as a player and subsequently managing the team for a two-year period. Additionally, Maldini’s son, Daniel, is currently part of AC Milan’s roster, although he spent the previous season on loan at Spezia.
