Referee Laurent Abrial, who oversaw the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup final between England and France, has been suspended from officiating international matches until January 1, 2026. The International Rugby League (IRL) misconduct committee determined that Abrial had engaged in unacceptable behavior, bringing the game into disrepute. They specifically cited his use of obscene gestures that had the potential to incite the crowd.
The final itself was an exhilarating match, with England emerging victorious by a narrow margin of 28-24 in front of a record-breaking audience in Manchester. Abrial, acting as the defense referee, expressed his disagreement during the closing stages of the game by wildly gesticulating after one of his decisions was overruled by attack referee Ollie Cruickshank.
The IRL stated that Abrial’s conduct, both during and after the game, violated their code of conduct in an inappropriate, unprofessional, and unacceptable manner. They emphasized that his behavior was detrimental to the interests of both the IRL and the French Rugby League Federation (FFR13).
According to the IRL, Abrial acknowledged his misconduct, and he has until Monday, June 19, to submit an appeal against the suspension.
