Who is Best Suited to Replace Potter as Next Chelsea Manager: Nagelsmann, Pochettino, Zidane or Someone Else?

by admin

Several teams in the Premier League are looking for a new coach. As the season comes to its end, there are many experienced and successful managers who can help these teams out. A European football journalist named Guillem Balague thinks that Julian Nagelsmann has the qualities to take on the position at one of these top clubs.

Tottenham and Leicester have both been searching for a new leader since Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers left. So who are the managers without a team right now that might get a call? And what can they do? Let’s take a look at this with Football Daily podcast!

86 Points Per Game

Julian Nagelsmann is 35-years-old and has been managing teams for the past seven years. He recently got fired from Bayern Munich. People are now wondering if him taking a job at Tottenham would be too risky! Throughout his managerial career, he has managed 243 games and won one Bundesliga major trophy. His record in Europe’s top five leagues (in terms of points per game) stands at 1.86.

In 2018, Nagelsmann turned down an offer from Real Madrid and is probably the best fit for any team that wants a new head coach. Even before Tottenham found out about Potter leaving, it was suggested that he would end up at Chelsea since their owner (Todd Boehly) has a good connection with him.

Julien Laurens, a European football journalist, said that if Chelsea decides to let go of their coach Graham Potter, the club should look for somebody called Nagelsmann who can handle the team’s responsibility. He also added that Bayern Munich firing their manager is seen as harsh but there were some real issues behind it both on and off the pitch with players in the dressing room.

67 Points Per Game Record

Mauricio Pochettino is a 51-year-old coach who has managed teams like Espanyol (2009-2012), Southampton (2013-2014), and Tottenham (2014-2019). He reached the Champions League final with Tottenham, but only won trophies in his latest team, PSG (2021-2022). With 461 games under his belt, he had 1.67 points per game record in Europe’s top five leagues. But after last summer, he hasn’t been coaching any other team.

Balague said the Spurs team have an open spot up for grabs and that Pochettino has been asked if he would be interested in filling the role. He said yes, so now it’s up to the chairman Daniel Levy to decide if he gets chosen or not.

Since Potter left, Pochettino has become one of the best contenders for the vacant job at Chelsea.

Luis Enrique Eyes Premier League Return, Pursuing New Challenge and Trophies

Luis Enrique, who is 52 years old, is interested in coming and joining the Premier League. He has managed teams such as Roma, Celta Vigo, Barcelona and Spain over his career. During that time he has won 190 games and some major trophies including 1 Champions League title, 2 La Liga titles, and 3 Copa del Rey titles. In addition to this he had earned good stats on average in Europe’s top five leagues. He was even very successful in Barcelona where he achieved a ‘treble’ (3 major trophies) and ‘double’ (2 major trophies) during his three seasons there too!

Recently, the former Spain manager left his post after their World Cup defeat against Morocco and is now being talked about as a possible coach for Chelsea.

“He says he only reads English media reports,” said Balague. “He wants to work in the Premier League next but there’s a problem. He won’t accept any job unless it leads to winning something or trying something new which leaves very few options.”

Zidane’s Achievements and Future Prospects Explored by Balague

Zidane is a manager, who has achieved quite a bit. In only five years, he won 3 Champions Leagues and 2 La Liga titles while managing Real Madrid team. However, it’s still hard to tell if he’d be as successful in another team. He also has a 2.24 points per game ratio in top 5 European Leagues in his 183 games.

Balague said: “Zidane isn’t hurrying to find a new job. He will only take a job if it meets his standards and expectations, whether that be with Real Madrid or the French national team, or even with Juventus if they make him an offer. But if no one offers him a job then he’s fine with it”.

“Conte’s Final Act at Spurs

‘I’m angry!’ – Conte’s last game with Spurs didn’t go well

Conte has been a manager for several teams, such as Arezzo (2006 and 2007), Bari (2007-2009), Atalanta (2009-2010) Siena (2010-2011), Juventus (2011-2014), Italy (2014-2016), Chelsea (2016-2018), Inter Milan (2019-2021) and most recently Tottenham Hotspur from 2021 to 2023. Over his 335 games as a manager he achieved 4 Serie A wins, one Premier League win and one FA Cup! He achieved 2.17 points per game in Europe’s top five leagues.

Conte might be seeking a new job, however he is unlikely to take the opening for Chelsea since he already was the club’s manager from 2016 to 2018.

Prior to being Tottenham’s manager which ended after some controversial comments he made about his players and the team’s culture, Conte had an impeccable record of bringing success wherever he went.

In all of this three preceding managerial roles in the last ten years – at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan – he has managed to win league titles at each of them.

Recently, the 53-year-old had gallbladder surgery and needs to take it easy. In addition, three of his close friends: Spurs fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gianluca Vialli have passed away in the last 6 months.

Who Will Chelsea Pick

Chelsea, who obviously have a lot of money, might decide to hire one of the many competent managers available. Roberto de Zerbi, an Italian manager, has done very well since taking over as Brighton’s boss this season; they are currently sixth in the league, five points ahead of Chelsea. De Zerbi has also had success elsewhere with Benevento, Sassuolo and even Shakhtar Donetsk. He left them at the top of their Ukrainian league before Russia invaded.

Chelsea may check out Thomas Frank who is the manager of Brentford. The 49-year-old guy from Denmark led Brentford to get promoted in Championship and they earned the same number of points as Brighton.

Meanwhile, Diego Simeone had done great at Atletico Madrid since 2011, including winning lots of La Liga titles and becoming a finalist twice in Champions League. He is likely looking for new challenges soon. Could it be this one?

One potential unemployed person Chelsea could look in to is someone who used to work with them – Brendan Rodgers. He was fired from Leicester, but he was previously a reserve boss at Chelsea between 2006 and 2008. It may seem strange, but another possibility is John Terry. He’s 42-years-old, a very famous legend from Chelsea, and has been with the club since 2022 after leaving his job as assistant coach at Aston Villa. While he was with them he helped the team to win 15 trophies!
